Can’t we just argue?
I am disappointed with Mr. Hodges Dec 2 letter (“Our Gambling Ways”), which objects on the grounds of personal freedoms to any disapproval of the legalized gambling (see “Loaded Deck”). This is the downward trajectory of classical liberalism: allowing individual freedom and so failing to trump the greater benefit of our society.
More importantly, I am disappointed that Mr. Hodges feels he cannot argue with anyone of a religious mind. Those who are theological informed are just as valuable in debate as anyone else. The exclusion of these persons from the public square undermines the very liberal principles Mr. Hodges invokes in his original complaint.
